Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, developing in the cells (melanocytes) that produce melanin — the pigment that gives skin its color. While melanoma accounts for only about 1% of skin cancer cases, it causes the majority of skin cancer deaths. Early detection and treatment are critical for survival.
Cuba has developed HeberFERON®, a recombinant interferon combination therapy for the treatment of cutaneous melanoma. Developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), HeberFERON® combines alpha-2b and gamma interferons to provide enhanced anti-tumor activity compared to either interferon alone.
Cuba’s approach to melanoma treatment integrates this biotechnological therapy with surgical oncology, standard cancer treatments, and comprehensive supportive care — offering international patients access to therapies not widely available elsewhere.
HeberFERON® is a unique Cuban biotechnology product that combines recombinant human interferon alpha-2b and gamma. This combination provides synergistic anti-tumor effects — alpha interferon directly inhibits tumor cell proliferation while gamma interferon enhances immune recognition and destruction of tumor cells.
HeberFERON® is administered by intralesional injection directly into cutaneous melanoma lesions, delivering high concentrations of interferon to the tumor site while minimizing systemic side effects. The treatment is used for stage 0–II cutaneous melanoma (in situ to regional metastasis).
Treatment protocols are personalized based on tumor characteristics, staging, and patient health. The therapy is administered by experienced oncology teams in specialized Cuban clinical facilities, with comprehensive monitoring and supportive care throughout the treatment period.
